Item: In Support Of The Essential

For pretty much all my posting needs I rely on the Post Office at Collington Mansion. Despite my regularly turning up with in excess of a dozen parcels to be shipped to as near as Eastbourne or as far away as Australia they have never been anything other then friendly and helpful. This was especially important for me in the run up to Christmas this year.

Local Post Offices serve an invaluable function to local people, and I am just one of many people who would be lost without them. Current plans to close huge numbers of local Post Offices needs to be opposed and stopped.

Therefor I humbly call upon all readers of this column - as well as everyone else - to join me and...

Item: Signs, Signs

We are told Curiosity Killed The Cat* and to a degree it holds true. When we are in a new town we are more likely to walk down the well-lit streets where there are dozens of people, rather then the dark deserted alley. But as locals will often tell you, the best shops and restaurants are often down these side streets because they cannot afford to be on the main roads. If people knew these fantastic places were a few meters away, if there was some way to tell them what delights awaited them in exchange for a slight deviation from their path, both the shoppers and the shops would benefit. And I have invented something that could do this - I call it a signpost.

Okay, so I’m being slightly flippant here, but the basic point is an important one. Where roads are not the main throughways - which, in the case of the town centre, are Devonshire Road and Western Road, people are not always inclined to walk down them and therefor miss out on some of the best and brightest places the area has to offer. My proposal is therefor to make use of signs, especially in the town centre where the recent “traffic calming” measures have left a lot of dead space, to promote the businesses that can be found down the side roads.

Would such signs cause an obstruction? If properly positioned, no.

Would they help local businesses? Without a doubt, yes.

Will it ever happen? Now that’s the real question...

Until next time,

*unless, of course, the question is “which will be the next 1980’s band to make a comeback” - that’s a joke for the 30-somethings amongst us.
