Item: Where Recycling Fails...

I recently had a leaflet through my door about the new recycling proposals for Rother. Now, whilst I fully support recycling, I feel that there is a major flaw in the availability of local recycling facilities. And, in a word, the flaw is:

C A R D B O A R D

Cardboard is something we deal with every day in virtually every bit of packaging we encounter, yet trying to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner is all but impossible in Bexhill. So every couple of weeks I make the trip over to the Asda at Eastbourne to recycle the assorted cereal boxes and other cardboard that I have accumulated. All of which seems pretty strange given the “Cleaner, Greener Rother...” campaign currently rolling out.

Local businesses now have to pay for waste to be disposed off in addition to local business rates. Given that a lot of the waste will be the cardboard packaging their products arrive in, it would make a lot of sense to have local - town centre even - cardboard recycling both to reduce costs for local businesses and to help increase the amount of recycling in the area.

Or is that too simple a solution?

Item: Simple Pleasures

As I write this, we have been enjoying a few days of glorious weather. Deep blue skies with just a few fluffy clouds drifting slowly across. And if the temperatures are not quite the highs of last Summer just yet, it is certainly a lot more conducive to being outside then the overcast and rainy days the preceeded it.

Friday afternoon I took my son (pictured left) down to the beach just south of the town centre. He was fascinated by the stones on the beach and kept bringing me interesting stones to have a look at.

Monday I spent a wonderful afternoon with him at the children’s play park in Egerton Park where he enthusiastically went on every piece of equipment he could - including four different swings. And I was reminded why I do not go on the roundabout.

Maybe it was seeing the town through the eyes of a soon-to-be-three year old, or maybe it was just the brighter weather affecting me, but I found myself falling in love with Bexhill all over again. And I realised how much I sometimes take where we live for granted. Somehow I suspect I’m not the only one who could put up their hands to this.

So I have promised myself and my family that this year we will avail ourselves of more of what this wonderful town has to offer, and that I will be sure to appreciate the simple things in life.

Until next time,
